Alan Bartlett Shepard was the first American to enter space. He was born on 18 November 1923, in East Derry, New Hampshire. He died, of leukemia on 21 July 1998 in Pebble Beach, California.

Mercury Mission

Shepard flew Spacecraft 7 a.k.a Freedom 7 on the MR-3 mission.

Shepard was slated to fly again in spacecraft 15 a.k.a Freedom 7-II on the MA-10 mission, but this mission was cancelled when the program was terminated.

Technical Reponsibilities During Project Mercury

Shepard concentrated on the tracking range and recovery operations, acting as a liaison with the Navy recovery teams.
