In the 1950s, Professor C. F. "Red" Lombard, of University of California, Los Angeles, invented the design modern helmet used in aviation, motorsports, and other sports. His key contribution was an energy absorbing liner. This design was patented by Lombard, and the liner was known as a "lombard". It was used in the Mercury helmet
