The term test capsule was used in a particular version of the SEDR-104 Mercury familiarization manual to distinguish capsules which had variations from the "standard" capsule(s) in that version which were known as specification capsules. The terms are misleading since all of the capsules were actually test capsules and subject to change. They were used, somewhat artificially, as a mechanism to describe the variations in the most economical way.
